Alciato's Book of EmblemsEmblem 34 Bear, and forbear Stern fortune must be endured by man through suffering; likewise too much happy fortune should frequently be feared. Bear, and forbear, Epictetus used to say. We ought to suffer much, and keep our hands away from things forbidden. So the bull, fettered by his right knee, endures his master's rule: and so abstains from pregnant cows.
