Department of Women's Studies
At the undergraduate level, the Department offers a Minor and Major in Women's Studies. At the graduate level, the Department offers the Master in Women's Studies (MWS).
The Major in Women's Studies is a multi-disciplinary program for the degree of Bachelor of Arts. The Minor in Women's Studies is a multi-disciplinary program offered to candidates for the degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science (Cooperative), Bachelor of Business Administration, and the physical education and recreation degrees offered by the School of Human Kinetics and Recreation.
These programs explore the experience and contributions of women from historical, cultural and multi-disciplinary perspectives. Assumptions about women and gender differences and the social implications of these assumptions are explored and attention paid to existing and emerging feminist debates and issues.
The Master in Women's Studies addresses the need for a fuller understanding of women and gender in society, and developing practical and policy initiatives that promote equality and social justice. It can be completed by full- or part-time study and by thesis or non-thesis (project/internship) programs. The program draws scholarly participation from faculty members in a range of academic disciplines and divisions. To date, there have been 31 graduates of the MWS program.
The Department of Women's Studies maintains a newsletter for alumnae of the Master of Women's Studies program.
