Homophobic vandals threaten St. John's residents

A forum participant described feeling unsafe when she left her west end home in St. John’s one morning, only to discover that a neighbor’s house had been spray painted with the word, "faggot". "It was so frightening. I wondered who lived there, if they were ok, if they knew that this word was painted across the side of their home...& what other forms of harassment they may have endured". She revealed that a mailbox in her neighborhood had also been vandalized, with the words, "Shawn is gay, Rob is gay" as if being gay was sufficient ground to inspire hatred & abuse. Such a blatant indication of homophobia in Newfoundland suburbia is indicative of the need for major educational initiatives in this province. It is unfortunate that The Heterosexism Enquirer was not successful in its proposal to the Justice department to educate the province about homophobic-based hate crimes.
