ICQ is a popular online message system that lets you know when other ICQ users are also online & available to communicate. One Forum participant who logged on for a general chat described himself as GWM (gay white male). Within minutes he was the recipient of severely homophobic messages, including "FAGGGG!". Another participant advised that she encourages communication with other LGBT through subtlety - using language that will be obvious only to those with whom she desires to converse. For the safety of ICQ users who are LGBT, these tips will not be posted here! Suffice it to say, positive/ safe spaces in cyberspace are needed.
