Education and Gay-Straight Alliances

The Globe and Mail, April 2000

Following the recent suicide of a young gay man who was the victim of homophobic-based harassment and abuse by classmates, the Teachers Federation of British Columbia proposed that Gay Straight Alliances be initiated in that province’s high schools. The Globe & Mail reported, however, that an organized demonstration of parents picketed the Teachers Federation Convention to oppose the formation of GSA’s. Although the outcome was a positive one, with the majority of teachers voting in favor of GSA’s, one Forum participant states, " I believe that we cannot take comfort in a decision that came after such vehement opposition. We need to remember that lesbian, gay and bisexual youth are not committing suicide in numbers far exceeding heterosexual youth because they are gay. Rather, they are committing (and attempting) suicide because they are experiencing the fear, hatred and ignorance of other people. In my opinion, these youth are having their lives taken from them - not ending them themselves". The Heterosexism Enquirer agrees.
