Education/ Curriculum

Heterosexism impacts knowledge. Most educational institutions operate according to the heterosexist assumption that the world is straight. Thus, what appears in textbooks and gets discussed in the classroom is not inclusive of everyone. History, for example, tends to be written by the winners - i.e. white, heterosexual men. The identities, lives, histories, & struggles of women, LGBT, and racial minorities are generally overlooked in most mainstream schools, universities, & colleges. In classes of human sexuality, heterosexuality is presented as the only sexuality. In studies of human relations, the traditional nuclear family is portrayed as the norm. History is concerned with great men & wars. If LGBT are acknowledged, it is limited to special interest "boxes" - set aside from the main content as anomalies. Forum participants expressed the need for total acknowledgement through university courses that deal strictly with LGBT history, human rights struggles, and sexuality. It was noted that the University of Toronto’s Women’s Studies Program, which offers Sexual Diversity Studies, addressed this need. No such program is offered at Memorial University of Newfoundland and courses with LGBT content are probably limited to subsections of women’s studies courses.
