History

In 2018, the School of Social Work at Memorial University of Newfoundland celebrates its 50th Anniversary of Professional Social Work Education.

This marks fifty years since the Memorial University Senate received a report recommending the establishment of a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree, thus marking the initial steps toward becoming the professional school it is today.

Dr. Frank Turner was recruited as the first director of the then Department of Social Welfare, with a mandate to develop the BSW for Memorial University. The school’s foundations incorporated influences from the U.K., U.S.A. and the rest of Canada, built on social work traditions already established in this province and committed itself to Memorial University’s special obligation to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The offerings at the school have since evolved to include a Bachelor of Social Work as a Second Degree, as well as Master of Social Work and Doctoral programs.
