Kiska Island was assaulted with over 60,000 bombs and artillary shells during 1942-1943. Ecological damage caused by these ordanance was temporary and minor compared to that caused by Norway rats introduced during occupation by the Japanese, US and Canadian military. The rats probably got ashore at the American and Canadian -built (1943) wharf at Kiska Harbor.
