Philosophy

The concept mentor is consistent in both Operation MENTOR and the GENESIS Centre. The mentors will be recruited worldwide, largely drawing upon Newfounlanders and Labradorians that operate successful advanced technology or information technology business outside the province but that continue to have a strong allegiance to the province (i.e. native Newfoundlanders, former residents, married to former residents, etc.). The mentors will continuously interact with the local entrepreneur through video-conferencing and Internet. They will also travel to the province, at least once a year, to serve on the local company's Board of Directors. The mentor, in cooperation with a contracted management counsellor, will help the entrepreneur develop a comprehensive business plan which will reflect the true business reality of the technology sector. Since the mentor will be the founder, President or CEO of a successful technology business, they will be able to plug the entrepreneur into their worldwide network of business contacts. This will position the entrepreneur to achieve market istribution and to identify and recruit experienced management personnel deemed to be critical to successfully implementing the comprehensive business plan. The mentor will also help the entrepreneur approach potential investors (venture capitalists, institutional investors, strategic alliance partners, etc.) And because of the mentor's endorsement, the potential for success will be greatly increased.
