The Department of French and Spanish has special research
strengths in several areas
including 20th-century French and French-Canadian literature,
semiotics, narratology, modern literary theory and emblematics.
Approaches are many and varied, ranging from the traditional to
computer-assisted research and learning. Members of the department
are active researchers in every aspect of French literature, from
the medieval to the present, in peninsular Spanish (especially
the medieval period), French (metropolitan and other), and Franco-Canadian
