The research projects of the Department of History, while
diverse, focus on a number of
common themes and areas. Several members of the department are
active participants in the Maritimes Studies Research Unit and
are conducting research into the impact of the ocean environment
on mariners and their land-based society and culture. In addition,
the International Journal of Maritime History is published at
MUN. The department has also played a major role in the Tri-Council
Eco Research project on sustainable development in a cold ocean
environment.
The department also houses the journal, Labour/Le Travail and its publisher, the Canadian Committee on Labour History, with considerable strength in the area of labour and working-class history.
The department, while particularly strong in Newfoundland
and Canadian history, also
conducts research in classical studies, ethnohistory, women's
history, and well as in African, American, British and European
history.
