Memorial University Research Planning Process

Since 2009, Memorial has been involved in a process to develop a comprehensive research strategy in response to Memorial’s 2007 Strategic Plan. The project is nearing the final stage of completion and the document has been endorsed by Senate.

The strategy was developed in response to the 2007 strategic plan, which included research, creative activity and scholarship as a key pillar of the university and identified five goals related to the advancement of research at Memorial.

The new research strategy helps address these goals and includes the identification of strategic research themes that represent areas of existing research strength as well as new areas of significant research opportunity.

The development of the research strategy was launched by Dr. Christopher W. Loomis, then persident and vice chancellor pro tempore, on Nov. 10, 2009.

The planning process was marked by extensive consultation. The planning committee completed 110 internal and external consultation sessions throughout the province. In total, more than 1,250 individuals provided input into the strategy.

The final document, which was endorsed by Senate in September, 2011, identifies the principles, goals and objectives that will guide Memorial’s pursuit of research excellence, translation and impact. The document is now being translated into print and electronic forms consistent with Memorial's brand for public distribution.
