Research Grant Opportunities

INTERNAL DEADLINES

Institutional Review: The Office of Research Services (ORS) requires applications be received a minimum of 3 working days before the funding agency deadline for institutional review and signature. Appropriate Department Head, and Dean/or Associate Dean (Research) signatures for all applicants/co-applicants must be obtained prior to submission to ORS for Institutional review and signature. Departments/Schools/Units require applications to be received at least 1 day in advance of submission to ORS. Please check with your Department/School/Unit for any other restrictions.

Optional Comprehensive Review: The ORS provides researchers with the option of submitting applications a minimum of 10 working days prior to deadline for comprehensive review and institutional signoff. For some competitions where large numbers of application submissions are anticipated, notifications of requirements for longer review periods may be communicated. Comprehensive review allows for checks of application format and compliance with agency guidelines.

Co-ordination with Grants Facilitators/Research Officers: The Office of Research Services will be consulting with the Grants Facilitators/Research Officers in the academic unit(s) of applicants as applications are received for reviews.

FOR ALL APPLICATIONS FOR RESEARCH FUNDING: Institutional Review of all applications, including notifications or letters of intent, is required. The Office of Research Services (ORS) requires completed applications to be received a minimum of 3 working days before the funding agency deadline for institutional signoff. For greater clarity, where a deadline for submission is Monday, August 1st, 2011, your completed application must be received by ORS at noon (12:00 p.m.) on Wednesday, July 27th, 2011.

A completed application includes the final draft of your application (including all forms, letters of support, CVs or other materials to be submitted to the funding agency) together with all required signatures. Appropriate Department Head and Dean/Associate Dean (Research) signatures for all internal applicants/co-applicants must be obtained prior to submission to ORS for Institutional review and signature. Departments/Schools/Units often require applications to be received at least 1 day in advance of submission to ORS. Please check with your Department/School/Unit to determine the deadline for departmental review.

In addition, if there are external co-applicants (meaning applicants based at institutions other than Memorial), their signatures, together with signatures from their institutions (as provided by the ORS or equivalent at that institution) must also be obtained prior to submission to ORS for Institutional signature. Please note that internal deadlines will also apply at other institutions. Please check with partnering institutions, if applicable, regarding their deadlines to provide review of applications and to provide signatures for co-applicants.

If you have any questions regarding procedures for the submission of grant applications, please contact Debbie Barnes, Manager Grants: Tel: (709) 864-4076

Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada Internationalization of Research and Development Program Call for Proposals
Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has recently launched the Internationalization of Research and Development (IRD) grant program, a 5 year $5M initiative. The IRD program gives University and College researchers involved in existing or on-going agriculture research the opportunity to develop collaborations with academic, government or industry research institutions in foreign countries. Successful applicants will receive grants of up to $60,000 to cover the costs related to travel and accommodations, use of foreign lab facilities and other related costs to further develop expertise in priority areas for agriculture, agri-food and agri-based products. Applications are welcome on an ongoing basis until funding is exhausted. While there are no deadlines to apply, funded projects must be completed by March 31, 2015, therefore, the timing of applications must allow for this condition to be met.
Successful applicants must demonstrate the following:

• the proposal is twinned (paired) with an existing or on-going research project in agriculture or allied sciences approved under one of the NSERC’s R&D grants programs;
• the proposal is focused on internationalization and will lead to collaboration with a foreign academic, government and/or industry research institution; and
• the proposal will enhance the Canadian agri-science research capacity and relates to one or more of AAFC's seven strategic science and innovation goals.

More information about this program can be found online at the AAFC website, or by contacting Stephen Keough, IRD Program Manager, at stephen.keough@agr.gc.ca. Please click here for a copy of the IRD Program Guidelines* or Application Form*.
