Purpose
To provide financial assistance to scholarly publishing from within
the University community. While all forms of scholarly publication are
eligible for support, priority will be given to book-length manuscripts
of merit. Book chapters and journal articles will be considered where funds
permit.
Eligibility
1. Any member of the university community.
2. Funds are limited and their allocation will be competitive in keeping
with normative criteria of scholarly excellence.
Categories of Financial Assistance
The Committee will consider:
1. Assistance towards cost of illustrative material (maps, photos, figures, and the like) after a manuscript has been accepted by a publisher.
2. Subvention towards publication costs where the publisher makes this
a condition of publication.
Procedures
1. To apply, please contact the Office of Research for an application form.
2. Applicants must document that every reasonable effort has been made to secure a subvention from other sources; or provide the reason why this could not be done.
3. In evaluating an application, the Committee requires 6 copies of all relevant correspondence with the publisher, including the publisher's readers' reports and the contract, together with one copy of the work.
4. The closing dates for completed applications are 15 April and 15 November annually. The awards will be announced as soon as possible.
5. Urgent requests for small sums can be entertained by the Committee
outside the set dates.
Contractual Obligations
1. Recipients of a subvention from the Committee are obligated to re-pay 50% of any royalties up to the amount of the subvention. All re-payments will be deposited with the Publications Subvention Program.
2. Acknowledgement in the published work of the subvention(s) received.
3. Deposition of one copy of the published work with the University
Library.
Composition of the Committee
1. Committee members are appointed by the Vice-President (Research and International Relations).
2. Members shall serve for a 3-year period (renewable once); they shall
choose a chairperson from among their number -- the chair serves for a
1-year period (renewable once).

and International Relations) by the end of each fiscal year.
