Memorial VP appointed vice-president of MRC

Memorial's vice-president (research), Dr. Kevin Keough, has been appointed vice-president of the Medical Research Council of Canada (MRC). Dr. Henry Friesen, president of the MRC, announced the three-year term appointment in Ottawa on July 28.

Dr. Keough was appointed to the governing council by the Governor General in Council in 1993. The MRC is composed of up to 22 representatives drawn from across Canada and from various sectors. In addition to serving as vice-president of MRC, Dr. Keough will serve as a member of the executive, and the budget and audit committees of the council. He will also co-chair MRC's Standing Committee on Planning and Evaluation.

Dr. Keough -- a professor in Memorial's Department of Biochemistry -- was appointed vice-president (research) in 1992. He also holds a cross-appointment as a professor of biochemistry in pediatrics. He maintains an active research laboratory studying aspects of lipid and protein interactions in biological membranes and pulmonary surfactant, and in the use of liposomes for the development of vaccines for aquaculture.
