Ethics approval for health research

Due to changes in provincial legislation, all health research in Newfoundland and Labrador must be reviewed and approved by a provincial research ethics board. This ethics board is overseen by the Health Research Ethics Authority. Researchers in the Faculty of Medicine, School of Nursing and the School of Pharmacy are required to submit their applications for ethics review to the Health Research Ethics Board (HREB). ICEHR is unable to accept applications from these units until further notice.

Heath research defined in the Health Research Ethics Authority Act is defined as:

Activities whose primary goal is to generate knowledge in relation to human health, health care and health care systems, and involving human beings as research subjects, health care information respecting human beings and human biological material.

Ethics approval for research in the social sciences, humanities, sciences and engineering (St. John’s Campus)

Ethics approval for non-health related human research requires approval from the Interdisciplinary Committee on Ethics in Human Research. Generally, this process requires four weeks, but may take up to six weeks.

Ethics approval for research (Grenfell Campus)

Researchers at Memorial University’s Grenfell Campus are required to submit their proposals to the Grenfell Campus Research Ethics Board.
