The Canada Research Chairs Program was established by the Government of Canada to enable Canadian universities to achieve the highest levels of research excellence. In its 2000 budget, the Government of Canada provided $900 million to support the establishment, by 2003-4, of 2000 Canada Research Chairs in universities across the country. As set out in the Program Guide, this program is designed to enable Canadian universities to create outstanding research opportunities which will attract the global research leaders. Detailed information on the program and a copy of the Program Guide are available on the Canada Research Chair web site found at www.chairs.gc.ca.

The Chairs Program provides Memorial University of Newfoundland with an opportunity to strengthen its research culture, infrastructure and reputation through the retention of outstanding researchers and the recruitment of new faculty members with exceptional research records.
