Dr. Peter Wang

In addition to his new position at Memorial, Dr. Peter Wang holds university appointments at the University of Toronto and Tianjin Medical University and he is continuing to collaborate with researchers there. His research interests are in the areas of the epidemiology of cancer, arthritis and disability, and chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV). One of his recent research grants is on quality of life in cancer patients, funded through the Tianjin Science and Technology Committee. He has also studied satisfaction and barriers in seeking medical care in cancer patients for the American Cancer Society. He would like to pursue research on the impact of hip fractures on quality of life and the difference in impact on urban and rural patients.

Before joining the faculty at Memorial, Dr. Wang was an assistant professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Toronto. In China, he was director and professor of the Epidemiology Unit, Tianjin Cancer Institute/Hospital at Tianjin Medical University. His experience also included serving as senior scientist at the Division of Epidemiological Research at the Tianjin Institute of Traumatic Traffic Medicine from August 2000 to July 2002.

Dr. Wang earned his MD at Tianjin Medical University, Tianjin, China in 1983. In 1986 he was awarded a master's in public health from Tianjin Medical University. Between 1986 and 1989 he was a lecturer at the Tianjin Medical University. He came to Canada in 1989 as a visiting scholar and worked at the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba. From 1991 to 1995 he was a postdoctoral fellow and a research associate at the University of Saskatchewan. In 1996 he passed the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination for graduates of international medical schools. In 2003 he earned a PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the University of Toronto.
