Dr. Leslie Rourke
Dr. Leslie Rourke has extensive experience in rural practice and valuable research experience, particularly in infant care. Early in her practice career, Dr. Leslie Rourke and her husband, Dr. James Rourke, developed the Rourke Baby Record, which is used extensively by doctors in Canada and is endorsed by both the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Canadian Pediatric Society. Dr. Rourke is also interested in relationship and personal/professional boundary issues for physicians and their families, such as having friends as patients. As a full-time faculty member at Memorial, Dr. Rourke also has teaching and administrative responsibilities and has accepted the position of academic director for the Office of Professional Development for family physicians.
Dr. Rourke practised family medicine in Goderich from July 1979 to June 2004, sharing the practice with her husband. She was an adjunct assistant professor with the Department of Family Medicine at The University of Western Ontario (UWO), and taught students and residents in her practice since 1984. She earned her MD from UWO in 1977, graduating cum laude and winning the Medical Alumni Gold Medal for the highest aggregate average. She earned a master of clinical science (family medicine) degree from UWO in 1996.
Dr. Rourke's postgraduate awards include the Martin J. Bass Recognition Award in 2002 from the Department of Family Medicine at UWO; the Canadian Parents for French Mlacak Award for Ontario Volunteer of the Year in 2001; and an AMS/Wilson Fellowship in 1999 to develop the rural medicine and health master's course.
