Dr. Jerry McGrath

As one of six gastroenterologists in St. John's, Dr. Jerry McGrath has a busy clinical practice and the rest of his time is divided between teaching medical students and residents and doing some research. His first research experience was as an undergraduate science student working with Dr. Patrick Parfrey, University Research Professor, on an epidemiological study of hospital bed utilization. While training as a resident in internal medicine at the University of Western Ontario, he was able to participate in some clinical epidemiology projects including a cost analysis on colon cancer screening and the incidence of excess iron in the blood, which can cause significant harm to certain body organs. Dr. McGrath is interested in pursing this research and hoping to do a meta-analysis regarding new biological agents used to treat Crohn's disease. He is planning to do a master's in clinical epidemiology to formalize his training in this research area.

Dr. McGrath grew up in Torbay and did a B.Sc. (Pure Mathematics) at Memorial before entering medical school. He earned his MD in 1999 and went to the University of Western Ontario for residency training in internal medicine, with an extra two years of subspeciality training in gastroenterology.
