Dr. Octavia A. Dobre
Dr. Octavia Dobre received her M.Sc. and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from Politehnica University of Bucharest, Romania, where between 1998 and 2001 she was an assistant professor. In 2000 and 2001 she was the recipient of a British Royal Society and Fulbright fellowships at the Westminster University in London, and Stevens Institute of Technology, in Hoboken, New Jersey, respectively. She then joined the New Jersey Institute of Technology as a research associate.
Born in Crajova, the capital of one of the southern provinces of Romania, Dr. Dobre joined Memorial University as an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering. Her teaching activities include courses in communications and signal processing and her most recent research focuses on investigating blind methods to identify the modulation type of an intercepted signal with various civilian and military applications. "Implementation of advanced information services and systems for military applications, in a crowded electromagnetic spectrum, is a challenging task for communication engineers. Friendly signals should be securely transmitted and received, whereas hostile signals must be located, identified and jammed."
Dr. Dobre said that after being at Memorial for two months, she is already sure she made a good move. "Memorial is one of the most important universities on the Canadian Atlantic coast, being committed to excellence in teaching and research and I am proud to be one of its faculty members. After meeting several faculty members during my interview, I felt I could be a part of this successful team, and here I am. Both the faculty and staff have been very helpful, making my move a lot easier. I have also had pleasant experiences with students at Memorial. Most of them are keen to learn and eager to explore more."
