Dr. Rodolphe Devillers
Dr. Devillers research focuses on cartography using computer-based software, Geographic Information Sciences (GIS) and more specifically on data quality/usability, geospatial databases and spatio-temporal visualization. Working with the mapping side of GIS, he is interested in helping non-expert users to be more aware of data properties and limitations. At present he is working on a research proposal that would focus on fisheries management using geomatics sciences. "We would like to get a better insight into what happened over the past 30 years," said Dr. Devillers. "Using mapping software we hope to answer some of these lingering questions and possibly even make predictions of what will happen next."
Dr. Devillers received his master's and a joint PhD in geomatics sciences at Laval University and Marne-la-Vallée University in France. Previous to that he completed an undergraduate and master's degree in geology from the Université du Quebec à Montréal. Since the completion of his doctorate, he has been working at Natural Resources Canada (NRC) at the Centre for Topographic Information in Sherbrooke where he was working with students, researchers, professors and professionals to educate them on the recent standards set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for the GISciences field. He also has extensive experience working with Geomatics for Informed Decisions (GEOIDE) projects, part of the Canadian Network of Centres of Excellence, during both his master's and PhD in geomatics.
A native of France, Dr. Devillers comes to Memorial from Sherbrooke where he just completed a post-doctoral placement at NRC's Centre for Topographic Information. He now joins the Department of Geography as assistant professor teaching cartography and GIS mapping. Along with Drs. Alvin Simms and Élizabeth Simms, he will also be part of the team overseeing the operation of the GISciences teaching laboratory.
