Welcome to Memorial University of Newfoundland's Research Report 2004

In fiscal 2003/04, Memorial University's total research income reached an astounding $72 million. This represents a 40% increase over the growth achieved in 2002/03, and a doubling of our total research income since 1999/00. We attribute this increase to Memorial's ever-increasing appeal as an energetic, forward-thinking research institution, and our success in:

  •
  • recruiting bright new faculty whose creativity and research expertise are second to none;
  •
  • attracting outstanding graduate students who are increasingly choosing Memorial for their advanced studies focusing on research areas of major importance.
  •
  • securing strong and effective partnerships that have enabled us to grow our research capacity beyond what would be possible through the national funding councils alone, especially in strategic sectors that are important to the province; and
  •
  • renewing and creating world-class research facilities.

    This year's report highlights some examples of these successes and their impact on our province and the world. They illustrate the value of research to the well-being of individuals and communities, and the important contribution that Memorial University makes to this province.

    Indeed, as the only university in Newfoundland and Labrador, it is essential we have the research capacity to respond to local needs and global opportunities. We are proud to be meeting those needs. By growing research as we have done, we ensure our ability to respond even more effectively.

    We hope you enjoy this report and that it conveys to you both the pride in our accomplishments and our commitment to achieve even greater success.
