Memorial research in the international community
Memorial University has over 16,000 students and 800 faculty members in five locations worldwide: two locations in St. John's, one in Corner Brook, one at Harlow in Essex, England, and one in St-Pierre, a French territory on the south coast of the island. Researchers from our six faculties (Arts, Business, Education, Engineering, Medicine and Science) and seven schools (Continuing Education, Graduate Studies, Music, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physical Education and Social Work) work in a broad spectrum of academic disciplines with strengths in engineering, medicine, education, science and social sciences.
In the past decade, Memorial's increased international involvement has brought students and faculty from developing countries to the university for education and training. Memorial's students have studied overseas, enriching their learning experiences and developing the knowledge they need to participate in a global environment. Faculty and staff members have travelled and taken part in international projects and programs that have had many positive effects, at home and abroad. The university's scholars and students have benefited from participating in a dynamic international environment, enhancing the quality of education and contributing to the world community
In recent years, Memorial’s reputation as a world-class centre of expertise has grown, particularly in areas of marine-related research, distance education, teaching, and sustainable development and culture in coastal communities. This has translated into many significant cooperative initiatives with higher education institutions in developing countries aimed at improving socio-economic conditions and developing sustainable activities. Memorial has been a leader in creating innovative public-private collaboration on international projects. The faculty, administrators, staff and students have established a network that will provide a foundation for new international cooperation and development opportunities.
