Memorial is home to four new Canada Research Chairs. The Canada Research Chairs program was established by the Government of Canada to enable Canadian universities to achieve the highest levels of research excellence. It is expected that over the five-year life span of the CRC program, Memorial will be eligible for about 22 faculty positions in the strategic areas of oceans and coastal studies, industrial development and environmental sustainability and North Atlantic/Newfoundland and Labrador Studies.

A chair in North Atlantic archaeology will enhance and build upon existing links between the Archaeology Unit and other universities, agencies and research groups. The chair awarded to Dr. Priscilla Renouf, Department of Anthropology involves site survey and excavation of campsites and settlements of ancient hunting and fishing peoples and reconstruction of past settlement patterns and the past environment.

The chair in Irish studies will examine Irish identity and politics in the 19th and 20th centuries, focussing on nationalism, ethnicity and the relationship between Protestants and Catholics. Dr. Peter Hart, Department of History will also be looking at transatlantic networks linking Ireland with North America.

Dr. Thomas Michalak, Faculty of Medicine, will carry out research on the immunological, molecular and pathological aspects of both hepatitis B and hepatitis C as chair in viral hepatitis/immunology. "My research will centre on understanding how the virus induces liver disease, how it evades the immune system, and how it establishes persistent infection," said Dr. Thomas Michalak.

Dr. Beverly Diamond, an internationally renowned ethnomusicologist, holds the chair in traditional music/ethnomusicology. Dr. Diamond will direct and stimulate activity in the further development of the already-rich musical collections of the Memorial University of Newfoundland Folklore and Language Archives (MUNFLA) and will serve as mentor to colleagues and graduate students in Memorial's School of Music.
