18.3 Degree Requirements
  1. The Degree of Master of Music is normally completed in two years of full-time study. Comprehensive examinations are not administered. The normal residency period may, in some instances, be reduced through Summer and Intersession study.

  2. All candidates for the M.Mus. must complete at least 31 credit hours. Further courses may be required depending on the background of the individual student.

  3. All candidates must complete:

    1. Music Research Methods: Music 6000 (1 credit hour)

    2. Music Seminar: Music 6002

    3. Career Skills for Musicians: Music 6700

    4. Further courses may be required depending on the background of the individual student.

  4. Candidates in Conducting must complete an additional 24 credit hours according to their area of focus:

    1. Choral Conducting

      1. Choral Conducting: Music 6310, 6311, 7310

        • Instrumental Conducting: Music 6210
      2. Score Study and Analysis: Music 6100

      3. Choral Repertoire: Music 6007

      4. Electives: Six credit hours. With the approval of the School of Music. 3 credit hours may be from related disciplines.

    2. Instrumental Conducting

        • Instrumental Conducting: Music 6210, 6211, 7210
      1. Choral Conducting: Music 6310

      2. Score Study and Analysis: Music 6100

      3. Orchestral or Instrumental Ensemble Repertoire: Music 6006 or 6008

      4. Electives: Six credit hours. With the approval of the School of Music. 3 credit hours may be from related disciplines.

    3. Combined Choral/Instrumental Conducting

        • Instrumental Conducting: Music 6210, 6211
      1. Choral Conducting: Music 6310, 6311

      2. Score Study and Analysis: Music 6100

      3. Ensemble Repertoire: One of Music 6006, 6007, or 6008

      4. Electives: Six credit hours. With the approval of the School of Music. 3 credit hours may be from related disciplines.

  5. Candidates in Performance must complete an additional 24 credit hours as follows:

    1. Principal Applied Study: Music 645A/B, 745A/B

    2. Other Applied Study: 3 credit hours from Music 6500-6506, 646A/B

    3. Music Pedagogy: Music 6400

    4. Electives: Six credit hours. With the approval of the School of Music. 3 credit hours may be from related disciplines.

  6. Candidates in Performance/Pedagogy must complete an additional 24 credit hours as follows:

    1. Principal Applied Study: Music 647A/B, 747A/B

    2. Music Pedagogy: Music 6400 and 6600

    3. Pedagogy Internship: Music 6610

    4. Electives: 3 credit hours
