SCHOOL OF PHARMACY

THE ABBOTT PRIZE

Abbott Laboratories Limited awards an annual prize consisting of $250. This prize is awarded to a student of high academic merit.

THE ALCOHOL AND DRUG DEPENDENCY COMMISSION COMMEMORATIVE AWARDS

These awards have been established to commemorate the Alcohol and Drug Dependency Commission (1982-1992). In an effort to promote the pursuit of addictions studies in various disciplines, it is hoped that recipients will pursue careers in addiction-related fields. Up to three awards, valued at $750.00 each, are available annually and open to students who have completed a major or published paper at the undergraduate or graduate level or are completing an Honors Dissertation on addictions issues. It will be awarded on a rotating basis to students in Pharmacy, Nursing, Medicine, and Social Work with a Department receiving only one award in any given scholarship year. These awards will be granted by the Senate Committee on Scholarships upon recommendation of the Dean/ Director/Head of the respective departments.

ALTIMED ENTRANCE AWARD

Altimed Pharmaceuticals provides a $1,000 award annually to a student entering first year Pharmacy. The recipient will be selected on the basis of scholarship standing as defined by the university and the results of the Pharmacy College Admission Test. This scholarship will be awarded by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships and Financial Aid based on a recommendation from the Director School of Pharmacy.

THE PACE/APOTEX INC. SCHOLARSHIP/BURSARIES

Apotex Incorporated provides two awards annually in the amount of $750 each. The first is provided to a student who has completed year I of the Pharmacy programme with a high level of academic excellence, as judged by the faculty, and who intends to proceed to year II. The second is provided to the student who achieves the highest standing in Physical Pharmacy 4002 during Pharmacy year II.

THE APOTEX INC./P.A.C.E. "FUTURE LEADER" AWARD

This award, valued at $1,000.00 will be provided annually to a student entering the final year of the programme. The award is in recognition of a significant leadership role in organizations and associations of the undergraduate student body of the school as well as in recognition of the likelihood of noteworthy future contribution to the profession. In addition, the candidate should have consistently maintained a good academic standing throughout his/her undergraduate programme. The award will be made by the Senate Committee on Scholarships upon the recommendation of the Director, School of Pharmacy.

THE BOEHRINGER INGELHEIM (CANADA) LTD. PHARMACY AWARD

Boehringer Ingelheim (Canada) Ltd. offers annually two scholarships in the amount of $1,000.00 each to students entering the first year of the programme. Selection for the Boehringer Ingelheim scholarship will be based on academic achievement and score on the Pharmacy College Admission Test.

THE BMS PHARMACY AWARD

Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical Group awards this $500.00 annual prize to a final year Pharmacy student for excellence in Pharmacy 500X - Clinical Clerkship Course.

CANADIAN FOUNDATION FOR PHARMACY FELLOWSHIPS AWARD (NATIONAL AWARD)

The Canadian Foundation for Pharmacy Fellowships Award is made to nine senior Canadian pharmacy students. The award is provided to encourage excellence within the profession of pharmacy and is made possible by the annual contributions of practicing pharmacists and pharmacy-related businesses who share a vision of progress.

CANADIAN FOUNDATION FOR PHARMACY PAST PRESIDENTS' AWARD (NATIONAL AWARD)

The Canadian Foundation for Pharmacy Past Presidents' Award is made annually to the most outstanding pharmacy student in a Canadian university and is based on scholarship, on contributions to undergraduate life and on the likelihood of future noteworthy contributions to the community and the profession.

THE GERALD S. DOYLE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP/BURSARY

This bursary of $250.00 is presented by T & M Winter to a first or second-year Pharmacy student and is awarded on the basis of academic achievement and financial need.

THE G.R. DUNCAN PRIZE IN PHARMACY

This prize, valued at $100.00 is to be awarded annually to a student entering second year of Pharmacy studies who, in the first year of the programme, produced the best essay in Pharmacy 3011.

FISHER SCIENTIFIC AWARD

This award of $250.00 is provided to the Pharmacy student who makes the best presentation at the Annual Research Forum, which is held jointly with the Faculty of Medicine, the School of Nursing, and the School of Pharmacy. It is awarded by the Senate Committee on Scholarships, on the recommendation of the Director, School of Pharmacy.

THE EDWARD D. FREEMAN BURSARY

This bursary honours the memory of Edward D. Freeman, a prominent Harbour Grace pharmacist who was a founding member of the Newfoundland Pharmaceutical Association. It shall be awarded to a deserving student of good academic standing in the School of Pharmacy on successful completion of Pharmacy Year I to enable the student to complete his/her studies with financial assistance.

FUJISAWA AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH

Fujisawa Canada provides an annual award of $500.00 to a student from any year of the programme who excels in the Pharmaceutical Research course and who exhibits the potential to become a pharmaceutical researcher or scientist. The award will be administered by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships and Financial Aid upon recommendation of the Director, School of Pharmacy.

GLAXO-HARLOW AWARD IN CLINICAL PHARMACY

Glaxo Canada Inc. offers $2000.00 annually which provides travel expenses allowing two students each year to undergo the last rotation of their clinical clerkship in London, England. Students reside at Harlow Campus.

Applicants selected on the basis of academic achievement as well as their grade on a required essay. Students must apply for this award.

THE DR. L.R. HENSMAN PRIZE

This prize consists of a cash award and a trophy to be kept on permanent display in the School of Pharmacy. It will be awarded to the student who places first in the CAPSI sponsored patient counselling competition. Each year the name of the student will be affixed to the trophy and a $100.00 cash prize will be awarded. This prize is awarded by the Senate Committee on Scholarships, on the recommendation of the Director, School of Pharmacy.

THE HOECHST MARION ROUSSEL CANADA INC. SCHOLARSHIPS

Hoechst Marion Roussel Canada Inc. offers annually two scholarships in the amount of $750.00 each to deserving students entering the first year of the Pharmacy programme. The selection will be based on academic achievement and score on the Pharmacy College Admission Test. These scholarships will be awarded by the Senate Committee on Scholarships based upon the recommendation of the Director, School of Pharmacy.

KNOLL PRIZE IN PHARMACOLOGY

Knoll Pharmaceuticals Canada provides an annual award of $200.00 and the textbook "The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics" to the student achieving the highest academic standing in Pharmacy 4009 (Pharmacology). The award will be made by the Senate Committee on Scholarships on the recommendation of the Director, School of Pharmacy.

THE J. KEITH LAWTON MEMORIAL BURSARY

This bursary has been established by the Board of Directors and employees of Lawton Drug Stores with the support of the Sobeys Foundation, to honour the memory of J. Keith Lawton. The value of the award will represent the interest generated from the endowment each year. It will be awarded to a deserving student selected from all students enrolled in the Pharmacy programme. This award will be made by the Senate Committee on Scholarships upon the recommendation of the School of Pharmacy.

THE L.J. LAWTON MEMORIAL AWARD

A plaque, donated by the Canadian Pharmaceutical Association in memory of Louis J. Lawton, a founder of the Newfoundland Pharmaceutical Association, is presented each year as an Honor Award to a student entering the final year of the Pharmacy programme. The recipient shall be chosen by the students and faculty by ballot in recognition of a commitment to the Pharmacy School as well as a high degree of academic ability and showing of promise in making significant contributions to the profession of Pharmacy. In addition, this shall be accompanied by a miniature award and $500.00 in aid of tuition. The award will be made by the Senate Committee on Scholarships, on the recommendation of the Director, School of Pharmacy.

THE ELI LILLY BOOK AWARD

Eli Lilly Canada Inc. provides an award for a deserving student in the first year of the Pharmacy programme. The award consists of the current edition of Martindale's Extra Pharmacopoeia and $200.00. The student selected to receive this award will have an academically sound record with a willingness to participate and a potential for leadership roles.

THE MEDIS ATLANTIC LTD. SCHOLARSHIP/BURSARY

Medis Atlantic Ltd. provides two awards valued at $250 each. These awards will be open to all students enrolled in the School of Pharmacy and will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need.

THE MERCK FROSST SCHOLARSHIPS

Merck Frosst Canada Inc. offers two scholarships, one consisting of $1,000.00 and a medal to the top first-year student, and the other consisting of $1,000.00, a Merck Manual and a Merck Index to the top second-year student.

THE NOVARTIS BOOK PRIZE

The Novartis Book Prize presented by Novartis Canada Inc., consists of a $250.00 cheque, the textbook Martindales, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, and a plaque acknowledging the achievements of the recipient. It is awarded for academic excellence in clinical pharmacy, to a student completing the last year of the pharmacy programme.

THE NOVOPHARM SCHOLARSHIP/BURSARY

Novopharm Limited provides two awards in the amount of $500 to be granted annually to students achieving excellence in one of pharmaceutical manufacturing, biopharmaceutics, or medicinal chemistry.

THE ORGANON CANADA LIMITED SCHOLARSHIP/BURSARY

Organon Canada Limited offers annually an award of $350 which is open to all students enrolled in the School of Pharmacy. In addition, a permanent award in the form of a medical dictionary will also be given. A deserving student of good academic standing will be selected by the Undergraduate Studies Committee.

WARNER WELLCOME DRUGS IN SELF-MEDICATION AWARD

An annual award of $500.00 is presented by Warner Wellcome to a student who excels in the Self-Medication course in the final year of the programme.

PHARMACEUTICAL SUPPLIES LIMITED SCHOLARSHIP/BURSARY

This award of $500.00 is provided to a student who has successfully completed the first year of the Pharmacy programme. It is awarded by the Senate Committee on Scholarships, on the recommendation of the Director, School of Pharmacy.

PHARMACY'S CANADA CENTENNIAL SCHOLARS AWARD

This award offered by the Canadian Pharmaceutical Association consists of a $200.00 cash prize and a travel tour of approximately two weeks to visit manufacturing laboratories and health facilities in Toronto, Montreal or Ottawa and to attend the annual conference of the Association. It is made to a student who has completed the second year of the Pharmacy programme.

THE ROCHE PRIZE

Hoffmann-La Roche Limited offers annually a prize in the amount of $1000.00. It is awarded on the basis of academic merit to a student entering the School of Pharmacy. The prize will be granted by the Senate Committee on Scholarships upon recommendation of the Director, School of Pharmacy.

SABEX INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP/BURSARY

Sabex International (1980) Limited offers annually an award of $250 which is open to all students enrolled in the School of Pharmacy. A student of good academic standing with an aptitude for Pharmacy will be selected by the Undergraduate Studies Committee.

THE SCHOOL OF PHARMACY ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIPS

The School of Pharmacy provides two awards annually in the amount of $1,000.00 each to students entering the first year of the programme. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic achievement and their score on the Pharmacy College Admission Test. These awards will be granted by the Senate Committee on Scholarships based upon the recommendation of the Director, School of Pharmacy.

H.J. SEGAL PHARMACY MANAGEMENT PRIZE

This prize, valued at $100.00, is to be awarded annually to a student who attains the highest grade in the Pharmacy Management course. It is awarded by the Senate Committee on Scholarships, on the recommendation of the Director, School of Pharmacy.

THE SHOPPER'S DRUG MART ASSOCIATES SCHOLARSHIPS/BURSARIES

Shoppers Drug Mart provides three scholarships/bursaries valued at $600.00 each. These awards will be open to all students enrolled in the School of Pharmacy and will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need.

THE AUGUSTUS STAFFORD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This award is presented by Carter-Horner Inc. to honour a founding member of the Newfoundland Pharmaceutical Association, the late Augustus Stafford of St. John's. The award, consisting of $300.00, is given to the student achieving the highest academic standing in the first year of the Pharmacy programme.

THE WYETH AWARD OF EXCELLENCE

Wyeth Limited presents an annual award consisting of a certificate mounted on a plaque and a $200 cash prize. The award is presented for excellence in Clinical Pharmacy by a graduating pharmacy student.
