This basic knowledge provides us with a vocabulary without which educated discourse is impossible. The Core Programme is intended to lead students towards this sort of literacy. In addition to education in depth in one or two academic areas, or in an interdisciplinary area with a unifying theme, Grenfell students will acquire a breadth of knowledge that is sufficient to permit clear and effective communication with other educated people and provide the background necessary for life-long learning.
The Core includes a Literacy Requirement, a Numeracy Requirement, a Scientific Concepts and
Issues Requirement and a General Education Requirement. The Literacy Requirement is
intended to ensure that graduates of Grenfell College are able to express themselves clearly and
correctly and that they have a broad appreciation of the English language as a means of
communication. The Numeracy Requirement is intended to ensure that graduates of Grenfell
College are able to perform the basic mathematical functions necessary to live in modern society
and that they have a broad understanding of mathematics as the language of science and
technology. The Scientific Concepts and Issues Requirement is intended to ensure that students
have a grasp of important concepts and discoveries in science as well as an understanding of
issues that arise out of scientific endeavor.
