Rant like Rick 2010 Winners

Congratulations to the three winners of the 2010 Rant Like Rick contest.

Rant Like Rick $10,000 Award Winner

Kyle Aucoin
A grade 12 student at Lockview High School in Fall River, NS, Kyle rants about social networking, the amount of time that his peers spend on Facebook, and what celebrities are tweeting about on Twitter. Although he is a French immersion student, Kyle enjoys math, sciences and hanging out with his friends. Besides receiving numerous academic achievement awards, Kyle has also received athletic awards for his performance in hockey. With both parents originally from Newfoundland, Kyle has always entertained the idea of attending Memorial University. Kyle says that he has heard great things about Memorial, and by entering the Rant Like Rick contest, it is a great way to help finance his post secondary education while living in a great place like Newfoundland.

Second Place Winner

Avineet Sekhon
A grade 12 French immersion student at Holy Heart of Mary High School in St. John’s, NL, Avineet’s rant was inspired by the stressful time that precedes graduation, including worrying about scholarships and university applications. Avineet is an active member of student council and has recently been selected for the Canada Wide Science Fair. When she is not busy volunteering at the Janeway Children’s Hospital, she enjoys swimming and music. Her interest in debating and public speaking certainly played a role in her entry to the Rant Like Rick contest. With great tuition fees and the option for international travel, Avineet says it is obvious that Memorial University is the best option for her.

Third Place Winner

Micah Brown
A grade 12 student at Three Oaks Senior High School in Summerside, PEI, Micah’s rant about supporting all ages music was inspired by how close this topic is to his heart. Micah feels strongly that local art is important in every community. As enrolled as a French immersion student, Micah is a dedicated member of the school student council. He enjoys writing his own music and playing the guitar. The motivation to enter this contest came from the idea of winning money for something he enjoys, debating. And as a fan of Rick Mercer, Micah was hoping to do justice to his rant. Micah says that Memorial was a clear choice for his post secondary education after he toured the St. John’s campus and fell in love with the beauty of St. John’s and its surroundings.
