Bachelor of Theology by Distance

Students over the age of 35, who have completed the Associate of Theology or its equivalent, and are sponsored by their denomination for ministerial training (whether as ordained or as lay) may enroll in the Bachelor of Theology by Distance program. In addition, this program requires a “Local Residency” phase of at least two years, one additional year of full-time study on site at the College in St. John’s, and the following requirements:

Phase I: Associate in Theology Courses

Fifteen 2 credit-hour courses, as follows (may include those taken for the Associate diploma):
4 courses in Biblical Studies (2 each of Old and New Testament, including Introductory)
2 courses in Historical Studies
4 courses in Pastoral Studies
1 Introductory course in Theological Studies
1 Introductory course in Liturgical Studies
3 Elective courses

Supervised Pastoral Ministry – 12 weeks in either CPE or the Queen’s College alternative. Students must complete all Associate level courses and SPM/CPE before continuing into Phase II of the program.

Phase II: St. John’s Residency

Nine 3 credit-hour courses, as follows:
1 course in Moral Theology
1 course in Homiletics
2 course in Theological Studies
2 course in Biblical Studies
1 course in Liturgical Studies (Baptism or Eucharist)
1 course in Pastoral Studies
1 course in Anglican Church History (or a denominational equivalent)

All course selections must be made in consultation with a faculty advisor and approved by the Provost.

Three Vocational Development Seminars (Including Anglicanism and Liturgical Practicum or denominational equivalent)

Winter Semester - Community Placement

During this Year, as part of their training, students are expected to participate fully in the College’s commitment to a common rule of life, which requires attendance at Daily Offices, the Holy Eucharist, College retreats, and at all other community events.

Phase III: "Local" Residency

Four 3 credit-hour intensives offered by the College in central locations on a two-year cycle:
Christian Education
Theology III [Contemporary Theologies]
Moral Theology
Advanced Homiletics

Three additional courses as arranged by the College:
Denominational Studies (including topics such as Ethos, History, Liturgy, Polity, and any others deemed important by the student’s own denomination)
Parish Leadership and Administration.
Liturgy (baptism or eucharist)

Field Education – Year 1: Students will observe and reflect upon pastoral practice in various settings under the guidance of a denominationally approved mentor appointed by the College. Students also will arrange to receive regular spiritual direction, which hopefully will continue in subsequent years.

Field Education – Year 2: A Parish Internship of at least 570 hours under local supervision in accordance with the guidelines of the College.

Postulants are required to complete Profiles of Ministry Program and engage in the Student Development Assessment Program.

Throughout the program, a minimum average of 65% with no mark less than 60% in all courses so graded.

All requirements are to be completed within seven years of the date of first registration in the Bachelor of Theology program.
