Retaining quality
Dr. Mary Williams (L), a professor in Memorial's Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science and the NSERC/Petro-Canada Chair for Women in Science and Engineering, and Women in Science and Engineering coordinator Carolyn Emerson, are working towards improving female retention in the areas of science and engineering. Dr. Williams supports the efforts of Ms. Emerson, who has worked very hard in recent years on the WISE Summer Program, an initiative designed to expose female junior- and senior highschool students to science and engineering opportunities through work placements and group events. In fact, a recent masters of education thesis evaluating this program found an increase in students aspiring to study engineering after their participation, and found the participants also significantly more confident about their future.
