Best wishes and thanks to all involved were the order of the evening at a gala closing event for The Opportunity Fund on June 9, 2000. Five years of planning and fund raising culminated in a celebration to mark achievement of the campaign's $50 million goal and its objective — to enhance the Memorial University experience for students. In fact, nearly $60 million was raised by the time the campaign concluded: over $29 million from individuals, corporations and groups in the private sector were matched dollar-for-dollar by the provincial government.
Master of ceremonies, Dr. Rex Murphy, hosted the evening which was filled with words, music and video images highlighting campaign achievements. President Axel Meisen, former President Arthur May, Chancellor (and campaign chairman) John C. Crosbie and Premier Brian Tobin expressed their gratitude to the many donors and volunteers who took the campaign beyond all expectations. Keeping with the celebratory mood, students and graduates of the School of Music performed in ensembles and solo. Video messages from students, faculty, alumni and campaign volunteers underlined the impact of the campaign. The campaign's final report was distributed to guests, along with a video and book on the history of the university.
