Professor Emeritus
Dr. Henry Longerich
Henry Perry Longerich is an analytical chemist with a long record of
distinguished service to Memorial as a member of the Department of Earth
Sciences. He graduated from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, in
1963 with a degree in chemistry. After completing his Ph.D in analytical
chemistry at Indiana University in Bloomington in 1967, he held the post of
assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Alberta from 1967-72,
and was a post-doctoral fellow from 1972-1974 at Dalhousie University, He
came to Memorial University in 1975 and was a member of the Earth Sciences
Department from 1978 to 1996, when he retired. Dr.
Longerich's area of expertise is inorganic analytical chemistry. He has
extensive experience in X-ray fluorescence, X-ray microprobe, thermal
ionization mass spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma mass
spectrometry. He has a background in instrumental electronics and computer
interfacing of various instruments. He has also published more than fifty
research papers during his career. In 1996 Memorial named Dr. Longerich an
Honorary Research Professor.
Dr. Longerich still holds grant funding from the Natural Sciences and
Engineering Research Council, and, since his retirement, has continued to
pursue his academic interests. He has been teaching and carrying out
research in chemistry at the University of Alberta, at Memorial, and has
