for St. John's and
Corner Brook campuses

mproving the quality of the student experience at Memorial's campuses has been a major goal of the campaign. Student recruitment will be a significant issue for post-secondary institutions in this millennium. High quality student services and non-academic facilities will play a major role in attracting students to Memorial. The facilities built with the support of The Opportunity Fund will put Memorial University in a strong competitive position to attract the best and brightest students.

Over the years Memorial has created award-winning programs to help students develop their academic and leadership potential. However, many of these vital student services have been limited by inadequate space and dispersed locations. The Student Centre Annex at Memorial's Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in Corner Brook and the University Centre on the St. John's campus are changing all that. The Student Centre Annex, in operation since May 1997, is providing — for the first time in the college's history — student-directed space for meetings, entrepreneurial activities and social interaction. The University Centre, the new and centrally located home for student services and student government on the St. John's campus, opened in the fall of 1999. A key feature of the University Centre is the Memorial Tower, a new landmark built with the generous support of the Johnson Family Foundation.

Facilities for Health, Fitness
and Recreation

Memorial's Physical Education Building, opened in 1961, is the location of most of the physical education, recreation and athletic facilities on the St. John's campus. Since 1961 the university population has increased dramatically and outgrown these limited facilities. The new Field House complex, a multi-purpose indoor sport centre, will play a significant role in providing for the health, recreation and athletic needs of the university and the wider community, complementing the recently acquired Aquarena/Canada Games Park, which supports regional public recreation as well as campus fitness needs. Construction of the new facility is currently underway, with a completion date of late 2001.
