The University Centre officially opened. The new gathering-place for students spans Prince Philip Parkway, connecting the north and south sides of the St. John's campus. Student government and student services have found a common home under its roof. [ A look inside the new centre.]
Fourth-year computer engineering student Dan Lodge co-authored two papers for publication. They were submitted to the Interactive Distributed Multimedia Systems workshop and the IEEE Globecom 2000 Conference. QoS Study of Streaming Audio and Data Transfer Applications over Native ATM and Delay and Loss Analysis of Streaming Audio and Data Applications in ATM Networks were completed during his work terms in Ottawa.
Mark Callanan won the annual Gregory J. Power Poetry award for his poem, The Delicate Touch Required for China.
Linda White won the Faculty/Staff Volunteer of the Year award, presented by the Student Volunteer Bureau in recognition for her work with several heritage organizations in Newfoundland. Her contributions to the Newfoundland Historical Society, the Greenspond Historical Society and the Gower Street United Church Archives had a positive influence on a community and popular level, and on a scholarly and government policy level, provincially and nationally. Ms. White is an archivist in the Centre for Newfoundland Studies Archives, Queen Elizabeth II Library.

Construction of the new Field House athletics and recreation complex is under way. The multi-purpose building will include seating for more than 2,000 for major athletic and other events, as well as indoor running and walking tracks, a multi-purpose fitness/recreation area, and playing courts for a variety of sports. It will be ready for occupancy by late 2001.
Memorial and Cisco Systems Canada Co. announced an agreement enabling the School of Continuing Education to offer the Cisco Systems Networking Academy Program. The 280-hours of course work will include basic and complex concepts such as sub-net masking rules and strategies.
Students can now register on line. The advantages of the Student Web are numerous; for example, students can look for all the openings in any time slot, and if new slots are added those openings show up immediately. They can also pay their accounts, register for courses, change personal information and complete other chores in one session.
