PhD in Philosophy
The Department of Philosophy at Memorial is known for its breadth which has always included both analytic and continental approaches. Nevertheless there are relatively few Departments of Philosophy in Canada which can offer advanced study in Continental Philosophy. With half of our Department having research specializations in this area, we are confident that we have something fairly unique to offer. When combined with our strengths in Metaphysics, Philosophy of Religion, Ethics and Social and Political Philosophy, Memorial has a strong and coherently focussed research base for graduate students to draw upon.
Doctoral candidates will specialize in one or more of three
departmental research clusters:
• Metaphysics and its History
• Kant and Continental Philosophy
• Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy
The PhD program is intended to be completed within 4 years of full time study. Applicants should have already completed a Master of Arts degree in Philosophy or equivalent. The minimum residence requirement for PhD candidates is two years. The candidate must complete 15 credit hours of graduate level courses. By the end of the second year, the candidate must complete comprehensive examinations, including written and oral components. The content of the comprehensive examinations will be drawn from the three departmental research clusters. The candidate must also submit a dissertation proposal by the end of the second year.
The candidate will complete a second language requirement by the end of the second year of the program. Exceptions will be made for students working in recent Anglo American philosophy, in which case the students will need to pass an examination in philosophical logic. The PhD dissertation should be completed and defended by the end of the fourth year.
During their program, Memorial doctoral students will have an opportunity to study at the graduate level at the University of Augsburg, Germany, and at the University of Freiburg, Germany, with which Memorial University have a faculty/student exchange program. (See our most recent events here.)
