The Second Altum Society Donors' Night

The second Altum Society Donors' Night at the Bookstore was held on December 7, 1998. Alumnus of the Year for 1997, Kevin Major, was on hand to sign copies of his book, The House of the Wooden Santas, 1998 winner of the Christie Book Award and the Ann Connor-Brimer Award. The Altum Society was established in 1997 as an expression of Memorial's gratitude to donors for the new heights to which their generosity takes the university.

A Special Evening to Say Thanks

Donors to Memorial University attended a special evening October 28 , 1997, when they were welcomed to Donor's Night at the University Bookstore. While the weather outside was damp, the spirit of those who attended was certainly upbeat and positive. This event provided members of The Altum Society with an opportunity to visit Memorial's bookstore and, as a special bonus, John Crosbie was on hand to sign his book, No Holds Barred: My Life in Politics.

Gordon Slade, executive director of The Opportunity Fund, acted as host and welcomed everyone to this special night. Mr. Crosbie thanked all donors for their generous contributions to Memorial University.

The Altum Society was established with the 1997 launch of The Opportunity Fund as a tangible expression of Memorial's gratitude for donors' support and in recognition of the new heights to which their generosity takes the university. Its name comes from the university's motto, Provehito in altum, which translate as "Launch forth into the deep" or "Reach for the heights."

The Altum Society follows a Memorial tradition of recognizing the outstanding contributions of the university's alumni and friends. The society provides a permanent opportunity to acknowledge Memorial's generous supporters. All donors who contribute $1,000 or more to the university per year are entitled to membership. There are four membership categories: Member ($1,000-4,999), Patron ($5,000-9,999), President's Circle ($10,000-24,999) and Chancellor's Circle ($25,000 or more). Inclusion in The Altum Society entitles the donor to privileges including subscriptions to university publications and invitations to annual and special events.
