| Partnership and generosity are hallmarks of The Opportunity Fund Campaign |
|
All of the campaign's objectives relate to enhancing students' experiences at Memorial -- inside and outside the classroom -- an important consideration, as student recruitment will be a significant issue for post-secondary institutions in the next millennium. Achieving the campaign objectives has put Memorial in a competitive position to continue to attract the best and brightest students from across the province and beyond.
A strong private and public sector partnership supporting The Opportunity Fund is making these achievements possible. As individual, foundation and corporate donors contribute to the campaign, their gifts are being matched dollar-for-dollar by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. As expected, some campaign objectives are more popular with corporate donors; in fact, funding expectations have been exceeded in the area of teaching/research support. Other objectives, such as facilities for student services and recreation, are being more strongly supported by the students, alumni and foundations. A significant number of donors have not designated their gifts for specific purposes, instead requesting that the university apply the funding where needed. Similarly, in endorsing The Opportunity Fund, our provincial government partners have not designated their matching contribution to specific campaign objectives, providing the university with the flexibility to allocate the funds so that all of the campaign goals can be achieved. As contributors make their pledges and donate funds, the university is able to undertake some campaign objectives even before the campaign is completed. By using the money as it is received, the university has been able to put contributions to work immediately for our students. |
