Fog is good for your complexion

Don't be put off by what you hear about Newfoundland weather!

Sure, it can be windy, rainy or foggy in St. John's on any given day - but that can change quickly to blue skies and sunshine by lunch time.

We have what's known as a temperate climate. Winters here are generally mild with an average temperature of 0 degrees Celsius.

During the summer months, the temperature can go from cool to hot with an average of 20 - 23 degrees Celsius. Even on the hottest day, there's always an ocean breeze to keep you comfortable.

On average, the annual rainfall is 1191 millimetres and annual snowfall is 322 centimetres.

To try your hand at weather forecasting, here are some traditional folk methods used to predict our weather:

• In the fall, look out for dogberries. The higher the number on the trees around the city, the harsher the up-coming winter is imagined to be.
• Check out the birds. If you see seagulls flying higher than normal, bad weather is expected around the bend.
• What colour is the sky? As the saying goes: Red sky at night, sailors delight. Red sky at morning, sailors take warning.
