Rodney DeVries began as painter but years of freelance design contracts led him to work increasingly in three dimensions, culminating in studying violinmaking under Philip Davis and Sarah Beaton, NSVM. This led to an apprenticeship at the Sound Post, where he worked under the guidance of a significant number of violinmakers from the His time spent in busy workshop environments revolved around perfecting all aspects of setup, and the execution of ever-increasing challenges in repair and restoration. He continues to update his skills through yearly workshops, which he credits as an invaluable information exchange regarding repair and making techniques of both instruments and bows.
