Tuba Noel
Tuba Noel is a gathering and celebration of Newfoundland's tuba and euphonium players. It takes the form of a freewill offering, public Christmas concert. On December the 8th, 2012 players will arrive at Memorial University's School of Music at 10am to prepare for the day's events. A rehearsal will take place at 11am, under direction of Karen Bulmer, Low Brass Professor at the School of Music. The concert begins at 2pm outside Scotia Centre on Water Street, St. John's. This year, Tuba Noel will be in benefit of the Lung Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, and is sponsored by Memorial University's School of Music and Long and McQuade.
Here are some points to remember:
- If participants cannot make the rehearsal, they can still show up and play the concert at 2pm. All participants should complete a registration form and send it to Tony Taylor, or bring it on the day of the event.
- Participants are also responsible to print their own music off. If the music can be stored in a binder to protect it from blowing in the wind, that would be encouraged.
- At 10am on the day of the event, we will be decorating our instruments. Please bring some supplies to use and share around so everyone is decorated in a unique way!
Tuba Noel is inspired by TubaChristmas™ . The first TubaChristmas was held in New York in December 1974, and was attended by over 300 tuba and euphonium players. It was a tribute to William Bell, the famous American tuba player and teacher. William Bell was born on Christmas Day in 1902, and, after stepping down from his position at Indiana University in 1971, passed away. His successor Harvey Phillips created TubaChristmas as a tribute to Bell's pedagogy, dedication, integrity, and the camaraderie he cherished amongst low brass players. This event has taken root in well over 150 cities across the world.
