United Way commitment recognized

Memorial’s commitment to the United Way in 2013 was recently recognized by United Way Newfoundland and Labrador at its annual campaign celebration held April 10, 2014.

At the event Memorial received two recognitions. The first award, the #6 Star of the Way Award acknowledges that of all workplaces and government departments participating in the payroll deduction program in Newfoundland and Labrador, Memorial raised the sixth highest amount (in total 69 workplaces and 24 government departments participated).

Memorial also received the Bronze Builder of the Way Award. This award recognizes workplaces that have improved their campaign either by average gift (amount donated by each employee) or its overall percentage of participation (the number of employees giving based on total number of employees at the organization). In 2013, Memorial increased in both of these areas.

Karen Kennedy, internal consultant, Office of the Provost and Dr. Linda Hensman, former dean, School of Pharmacy co-chair the United Way campaign at Memorial. Ms. Kennedy and Dr. Hensman accepted the awards on behalf of the university.

“Receiving these awards is an honour that recognizes all of the activity that took place at Memorial this past year in support of United Way Newfoundland and Labrador” said Ms. Kennedy. “We held payroll deduction campaigns in both the spring and in the fall and we participated in the Stuff a Sock campaign in December. As a result of the payroll deduction campaigns, our employees donated over $22,000 in 2013 and have committed even more for 2014.”

“I recently joined Karen as a co-chair of the United Way campaign at Memorial,” said Dr. Hensman.  “The university’s campaign had a number of successes in 2013. With the momentum our campaign has gained, I look forward to Memorial being able to help the United Way and the organizations it supports even more as we move forward.”

Memorial University is a founding supporter of United Way in this province. Its employees have contributed through United Way’s workplace campaign via payroll deduction, direct donation and through support of special events and activities.
