DAY-BY-DAY

DAY NINE -- 8 NOVEMBER, 2000

STATUS OF NEGOTIATIONS:

A "pause" is just that – a pause!

At the request of the conciliator, talks between MUNFA and MUN administration have paused to allow both sides to take a breather. This does not mean that they have broken off or ended.

The conciliator will be meeting with the Chief Negotiators from both sides at 4:00pm today.

The pause occurred because MUN negotiators reported that they had "no further flexibility" in relation to front end loading of salary increases, stipends for overload teaching, the reduction of six-course norms, severance pay, and paid vacation carryover In other words, they refused to negotiate further on these outstanding issues.

MUNFA negotiators indicated that they remain flexible and ready to continue negotiating.

The pause will allow both parties to reassess their positions. We remain confident that the administration will be able to find the necessary flexibility to allow negotiations to come to a mutually acceptable conclusion.
