8:30 am. Bus will leave at 8:30 sharp. landscaping will be the
priority for Saturday as areas need to be cleared for the shed and
around the patio. Please let us know if you are interested in
volunteering on Saturday.
Due to weather conditions last week, Facilities Management is continuing to lead the way by plastering and finishing up the electrical. If you have have not yet had the opportunity to volunteer or would like to join us on Saturday, please contact Kim at 749-2170 or Melissa at 749- 4056. We need your help to help finish this house this week.
Memorial University has teamed up with Petro Canada and Cabot Habitat for Humanity to build a house. This nine day adventure will provide a family in need with a home during I ♥ MUNdays 2008.
Progress:
With the Carpenters, Electricians, and Plumbers from Facilities Management leading our team of students, faculty and staff, the Memorial community worked along with volunteers from Petro Canada and Cabot Habitat for the past 6 days. Here is a summary of the build at a glance:
Day 1 – 27 MUN volunteers helped to put up the exterior walls on the second floor, and star the portioning of the rooms on the main floor.
Day 2 – 30 MUN volunteers helped to partition all rooms on the second floor, lay the ceiling on the first floor begin the studding of the exterior walls on both floors
Day 3 – 20 MUN volunteers helped to put in the windows and doors and prepare for siding
Day 4 - 20 volunteers including MED 6220 arrived on site and eager to volunteer. However as building conditions were less than ideal, the general volunteers were asked to return to campus. Meanwhile the carpenters, electricians and plumbers stayed behind to run water, electricity and do some finishing touches to prepare for day 5
Day 5 - Siding was completed on the front of the house and imore than half finished on remainder of house. We are starting to see a finished product from the front. It is so exciting.
Day 6 - Today we worked in the snow and cold to complete the siding on the back and one side. Inside we put insulation on both levels and began teh vapor barriering. A job well done. We are so proud of you all for the last six days.
Day 7 -
Another great day at the build working with Petro Canada. Today was
our last day working together and it was sad. It has been a great
experience. Vapour barrier was placed on most walls and ceilings -
a huge task. Siding was also completed and a platform step was
begun. What a difference all the volunteers made again
today.
Day 8 - Today the sun shone as we worked on gyproc - we completed about 70 percent today. With lots of help tomorrow we should finish athe gyproc and begin landscaping in preparation for the Botanical Gardens.
Day 9 - Along with Dr. Walker, we worked on gyproc and prepared the grounds and house for the dedication ceremony. Another great day at the build with Memorial volunteers making a great difference.
Day 10 - Today we spread topsail, helped build a fence, worked on gyproc and plastered a first coat on most walls. It is really coming together.
Day 11 -
Today was a mix of sun and rain with both inside and outside work
being completed. Staff and students worked inside to complete
gyproc on the ceilings on the second floor and some areas of the
walls. MED 6220 , staff and family worked in the pouring rained to
work on the challenging hilll. Both the Habitat team and the
Botanical gardens could not believe the progress that this small
group had made on such a wet day. Patio blocks were also laid today
but it was too wet to finish.
Day 12 -
Regretfully today Habitat has cancelled the general volunteers
which was unfortunate as it turned out to be such a nice day. A
small crew of us completed the rest of the gyproc - yeah it was a
huge task while the carpenters from FM worked on plastering and the
electricians installed heaters and lights.
