HISTORY:
The Good Friday Prayer Walk began in 1984. It
was a project that was spearheaded by Mr. John Furey,
a teacher at Gonzaga
High School. The idea of
reenacting the journey of Christ on the way to Criene
as a modern day way of drawing attention to various social justice issues.
The idea was readily embraced by the students and though the support of
various individuals the walk began. Since than the walk has be a project of Gonzaga High School.
It has had great successful turnouts, some years attracting as many as 6oo
followers. The walk has also the attention of the media over the years and
made many articles in the local papers. In 1999 the walk was officially
adopted by the Memorial University of Newfoundland Catholic Community
(MUNCC) and now the planning is under way for the 21th
annual "Good Friday Prayer Walk". In the year 2003 The Prayer
Walk campaign was launched with such sponsors as Gonzaga
Development and Peace, the catholic committee of Peace and Justice and the
Memorial University of Newfoundland Catholic Community.
Goals of "The Good Friday Prayer Walk"
EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO THE PRAYER WALK! It is
not meant to be limited to those of just the Catholic faith. The prayer
walk gives a chance to reflect, learn about social justice issues facing
humanity, understand the challenges facing developing countries and offers
a time to be thank full for the current situation that they are in. current
situation that everyone is in. The prayer walk is in no form a
demonstration, it is a reenactment of the journey of the cross. There are
14 stops, at each stop a station of the cross is
read. There are different readers for each station who come from and
represent various groups and organizations. Each station also has a theme
that is tied in to the theme of the station in some way.
