Board of Regents Nominees
Hayward Blake (B.Ed. '78, M.Ed. '84)
Hayward has been an educator since 1975. A graduate of Memorial University, he has taught in Dover, Labrador City, Victoria, and Bay Roberts, and is the principal of Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts.
Hayward's excellence in leadership has been recognised throughout his career. In 1995 he was singled out by the Reader's Digest Education Foundation, and he was named Canadian Principal of the Year for 1997 by the Canadian Association of Principals.
A past member of the Board of Regents, Hayward has served as president of the CeeBees Minor Hockey Association. He is the chairman of the boards of directors for the Cantilena and Cantare choirs.
"I believe that Memorial was instrumental in helping me achieve a very successful, satisfying, and rewarding career in the education profession," says Hayward. "As a parent and an educator, I feel that the University must continue to play a prominent role in helping to shape the future of this province."
Leigh Borden (BA '00, MA '01)
Student life is, and has always been, of primary interest to this recent graduate of Memorial University (BA '00) and the University of Toronto Leigh is a former president and vice-president of the Memorial University of Newfoundland Students' Union, and has served on many committees within the university community. She was heavily involved in the realisation of our new student centre, and has always taken an active role in improving student life.
Leigh lives in Toronto, where she works in communications for Ontario's Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Recreation. She firmly believes in the benefits of a Memorial University education, and states that she would like to give Memorial the best of her ideas and enthusiasm. "Serving on the Board of Regents would allow me a great opportunity -- the chance to help Memorial excel."
Lisa Browne (BA '91, MBA '93)
Memorial has played a major role, both academically and professionally, in Lisa's life. A graduate with a BA and an MBA, she was operations manager of The Opportunity Fund, Memorial's largest fund-raising campaign, and organized several alumni events while living in Toronto.
Lisa is director of communications with the Peninsula Health Care Corporation and has worked in fund-raising and marketing in many organizations in Toronto, including the Royal Conservatory of Music, the Shaw Festival, and the Canadian Stage Company.
Now residing in Clarenville with her husband, engineer Tim Hollett, Lisa is president of the Clarenville Rotary Club; she plays violin in the College of the North Atlantic Chamber Choir, and enjoys skiing and kayaking.
Calvin Butt (BA(Ed.) '64, BA '67, GDE '71, M.Ed.'74)
In both the academic and community realms, Calvin Butt has been a part of the education system in this province throughout most of his life.
A graduate of Memorial University, Calvin has served the educational system in this province over the past two decades as a schoolteacher, a principal, a supervisor and an assistant superintendent. He has strengthened his dedication to education through continuous involvement with his alma mater as an instructor, a member and former vice-chair of the Board of Regents, vice-president of the Alumni Association, and founding president of the Baccalieu Trail Alumni Chapter.
Calvin continues his commitment to the education system today as chairman of the Avalon West School Board, and as secretary/treasurer of the Newfoundland and Labrador School Boards Association.
Ernest Condon (BA '68, B Ed '69, Grad Diploma '71)
Ernest has been involved in promoting community growth and awareness as an educator and a community leader since he first graduated from Memorial University.
A teacher, guidance counsellor, and administrator, Ernest has worked with the School Counsellors Association, the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers Association, Memorial University's Board of Regents, the Alcohol and Drug Advisory Committee, the Canadian Mental Health Association, and various other community organizations. Most recently, he has been a municipal councillor with Labrador City, and a founding member and vice-president of the Labrador West Employment Corporation.
Ernest's enduring dedication to community and professional service has been recognised through awards such as the Labrador West Citizen of the Year, the Outstanding Professional Contribution Award, the Memorial University of Newfoundland Alumni Eaton Honour Society Award, the Town of Labrador City Builders Award, and the Newfoundland and Labrador Volunteer Service Medal.
Residing in Labrador City, Ernest continues to demonstrate his interest in personal and community development through active volunteering.
Ken Crocker (B.Rec. University of Alberta), MBA '02
Ken has made a significant impact on Memorial University through his 11 years with Alumni Affairs and Development. After earning a BA in recreation administration in 1986 from the University of Alberta, he has completed his MBA, part-time, from Memorial, and convocated this Spring.
A member of the successful team responsible for the success of The Opportunity Fund campaign, which exceeded its $50 million goal by 20 per cent, Ken also played a key role in building the Annual Alumni Golf Tournament into one of Memorial's most successful alumni events. Most recently, he contributed greatly to the growth of the Annual Fund at the university, and implemented a Major Gifts program during the last capital campaign.
Born and raised in Swift Current, Ken is employed as senior development officer of major gifts at the University of Alberta. "My unique combination of experience and knowledge about the university, the Office of Alumni Affairs and Development, plus my recent experience as a student in the MBA program," states Ken, "gives me valuable insight into the university."
Ken currently resides in St. Albert, Alberta, with his wife and two children. They are expecting their third child in August.
Sean Hanrahan (BA '86, LL.B. '90-UNB)
President and CEO of the St. John's Port Authority, Sean graduated with a BA from Memorial University in 1986, followed by a law degree from the University of New Brunswick in 1990. His enduring commitment to community life can easily be seen in his diverse personal and professional experiences.
Throughout his time as a student, Sean was the associate editor of the University of New Brunswick Law Journal; he was published in the Education Law Journal, and was national vice-president of the Canadian Association of Law Students.
Community involvement for Sean has ranged from director of the St. John's Maple Leafs Hockey Club, to member of the Board of Regents at Memorial University, and most recently, to St. John's city councillor.
A lawyer since 1991, Sean has been president and CEO of the St. John's Port Authority since 1998. He is director of the American Association of Port Authorities, and of the Association of Canadian Port Authorities.
Earl Ludlow (B.Eng. '80, MBA '94)
As vice-president, Engineering & Operations, Newfoundland Power Inc., Earl Ludlow is responsible for the operation and maintenance of Newfoundland Power's electrical infrastructure and the delivery of service to almost 220,000 customers through the company's regional offices.
Earl has 25 years' experience in the electric utility industry, beginning as a co-op student in 1976. Since then he's held two regional manager positions and a managerial position at Newfoundland Power. From 1995 to 1997 he was vice- president, operations, Maritime Electric in Prince Edward Island. In 1998 he returned to Newfoundland Power as vice-president of operations and assumed his current position in March 2001.
Earl is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and the Canadian Electricity Association; he chairs one of the association's task groups.
Earl continues his life-long learning with postgraduate studies in electrical engineering from Memorial University. He sits on the Engineering and Applied Science Advisory Council and chairs the Faculty Development Subcommittee. Other community service includes his participation as chairman of the Newfoundland Safety Council, past chairman of the Newfoundland Science Centre, and former board member of the Victorian Order of Nurses.
Malachy (Mac) Mandville
Malachy has contributed greatly to Newfoundland and Labrador's education system for 36 years. He has worked as a teacher, professor, director of continuing education, and director of post-secondary education.
Through his community involvement Malachy strives for educational growth. He has served on the Roman Catholic School Board for St. John's, and the Board of Governors for the Labrador and Western Colleges.
Malachy is working with Assante Capital Management as a financial planning adviser and assistant branch manager.
Darrin McGrath (BA '89, MA '92)
Writing and teaching are the driving forces in Darrin McGrath's life. As a free-lance journalist in St. John's, he writes for The Newfoundland Herald, The Telegram, and The Express. His first book, From Red Ochre to Black Gold, was published in 2001.
A graduate of Memorial University, Darrin has been teaching sociology courses at his alma mater, on a contractual basis, for 10 years. He lectures at the St. John's and Corner Brook campuses, and has instructed several distance education courses with the School of Continuing Education.
Darrin is involved with his community as a Scout leader, a volunteer driver with the Cancer Society, and a member of the Newfoundland and Labrador Wildlife Federation. He is on the executive of the Terra Nova Council and the Knight's of Columbus.
He is married to Ann Stinson and they live in St. John's.
Larry Peckford (BA '69, BSW '71)
After graduating from Memorial, Larry entered the public sector 30 years ago and has been serving the community, professionally and personally, throughout that time. His work with Human Resources Development Canada honed his skills and his connections for developing community organizations. He is active with local chambers of commerce, the arts community, and retail co-operatives.
As a former member of the Board of Regents, an active volunteer within the alumni chapters of Grand Falls-Windsor, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, and Stephenville, and as a resident of the west coast of Newfoundland, Larry has sought change within the university context. He has encouraged Memorial to become more flexible to student and alumni needs, and has similarly promoted all campuses as offering unique and superior learning opportunities.
Gary Peddle (B.Comm. '82, MBA '85, LLB '88)
After graduating from Memorial University, Gary earned his bachelor of laws from the University of New Brunswick in 1988.
Prior to becoming partner in the law firm Benson Myles, Barristers and Solicitors, Gary worked with the Royal Commission on Hospital and Nursing Home Costs, and as a financial consultant with A. Harvey and Company. He has also lectured part-time with the Faculty of Business Administration at Memorial.
Community involvement is an integral component of Gary's life. He is past chairman of the Rotary Club of St. John's East Foundation Inc., past director of the Victorian Order of Nurses, and past president of the St. John's Oilfield Technical Society. At present, he is president of the Board of Directors for Big Brothers and Sisters of Canada, director and past president of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of St. John's, Mount Pearl and district, director of the St. John's Board of Trade, and charter president of the Rotary Club of St. John's East. He holds memberships with the Advisory Board for the Salvation Army, the Law Society of Newfoundland and the Canadian Bar Association, and is a member of Memorial University Alumni Association.
Gary and his wife, Olive George, have two daughters, Jessica and Jillian.
Andrea Quinlan (B.Comm. '93, BA '00, MSc '98--University of Colorado)
As chief operating officer with the Newfoundland Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation in St. John's, Andrea is continually meeting the challenge of recognising, planning, and fulfilling the vision of her organization. As a leader and a team player, she strives for the successful balance of strategic, operational and program planning.
After Andrea completed her B.Comm. at Memorial in 1993, she went on to earn a M.Sc. in health administration from the University of Colorado in 1998, before returning to Memorial to complete her second undergraduate degree of Bachelor of Arts. She is completing certification as a health executive from the Canadian College of Health Service Executives in Ottawa.
A resident of Mount Pearl, Andrea has worked in recruitment and human resource management. She is a member of the Canadian College of Health Service Executives; she participates in working committees with the Canadian Association of Provincial Cancer Agencies, where she also serves as a senior executive member of the senior administration and leadership teams.
Dale Kirby (B.Sc. '98, M.Ed. '00)
A graduate of Memorial, Dale is a former chairman of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Students (1997-99). He is completing a PhD in higher education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto (OISE/UT).
Dale has a great interest in post-secondary education, as is reflected in his continual contributions to educational reform at Memorial and now in his work as a policy analyst in the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.
"My work in post-secondary education policy gives me with unique perspective on my alma mater," says Dale. "I'm proud to support a high standard of academic rigour and a university that is accessible to our people and in touch with our province."
