  1. Is the Mathematics Learning Centre (MLC) the same as the Math Help Centre?

    No, the Mathematics Learning Centre (MLC) and the Mathematics Help Centre are two completely, unrelated separate entities. The Math Help Centre is located in room HH-3015 in the Mathematics (Henrietta Harvey) Building on campus. The centre is staffed by senior students and a lab instructor, Mr. Gerry O'Rielly, and is there to assist students in learning the material presented in Math 1050, 1051, 1090, and 1000. The MLC is located in Coughlan College, also on campus, where Foundation Mathematics courses (Math 10XF), selected accelerated courses and a self study version of Math 1090, are taught.


  2. Does the MLC tutor high school students?

    The Mathematics Learning Centre (MLC) currently does not operate an organized tutoring program for high school students. However, those interested in high school math tutors can contact Kelly Penton, Full time Instructor at the MLC by telephone at (709)864-3308/2412 or by e-mail at kpenton@mun.ca. Kelly is an experienced high school tutor and can tutor all levels in the K-12 system.


  3. Can I complete all 3 Foundation Math Courses (Math 102/103/104F) in one semester?

    It is possible for students registered in a Math 10XF class to complete more than one course per semester at no extra cost, if students pace themselves properly. If necessary the instructor will arrange for the registration to be changed to M103F or M104F at the end of the semester. In order to qualify for a change to M103F, a student must have successfully completed all required work to the end of Essential Mathematics, Module 8. To qualify for a change to M104F, the student must have successfully completed all required work to the end of Pre-Calculus (Part 1), Module 5. *It is important to note that a very small percentage of students successfully pass more than one course per semester.


  4. After writing the Diagnostics Survey Test(s), can I start (or be placed in) Math 103F or 104F?

    No, all first time students of the Mathematics Learning Centre (MLC) must register for and complete Math 102F, before promotion to Math 103F. To register for Math 104F a student must have successfully completed Math 103F.


  5. How long (how many semesters) will it take to complete the entire Foundation Math Program (Math 102/103/104F)?

    If a student is placed in the Essential Math program it takes, in most cases, three semesters to successfully complete M102F, M103F and M104F. For students placed in the Fundamental Math program it takes, in most cases, four semesters to pass M102F, M103F and M104F. For FM students to complete the courses in 3 semesters, the following is suggested:

    • 1st semester: FM 1 – FM 6b
    • 2nd semester: EM 3 – EM8
    • 3rd semester: PC 1 – 5


  6. What is involved in the Foundation Math Program?

    The Foundation Math Program consists of three non-credit courses: M102F, M103F and M104F (expressed collectively as M10XF) and is intended for students who either have a weak background in mathematics or are returning to the subject after some years. The program enables students to master mathematical operations such as those involving whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, integers, exponents, linear equations, algebraic and rational expressions, formulas, graphs, systems of linear equations, basic trigonometry, exponents, radicals and quadratics. The Math 10XF courses are designed to be self-study courses with tutorial assistance; they are not lecture courses. Students write a set of diagnostic surveys at the beginning of each level of the program (M102F/103F/104F) to assess their math skills pertinent to that level. Answers to the survey questions are analyzed and an individualized program is designed for each student based on the results of the diagnostics. Students are then given their personal programs outlining the work to be completed during the semester. Because each student’s program is individualized, the content of personal programs will vary. Please note that these courses are not self-paced; all assigned work must be completed and all tests passed by the end of the semester. Students should attend 150 minutes of classes per week and be available to write tests during designated test centre hours.


  7. Are all the Foundation Math Courses (Math 10XF/102N) offered during each semester (fall, winter and spring)?

    Yes, Math 10XF/102N courses are offered during the fall, winter and spring semesters.  Please refer to the MLC's current course offerings for on-campus and distance offerings (Current Course Schedule)


  8. Are all the Foundation Math Courses (Math 10XF/102N) offered during both intersession and summer session?

    Yes, Math 10XF/102N courses are offered during both intersession and summer session. Please refer to the MLC's current course offerings for on-campus and distance offerings (Current Course Schedule).


  9. I just wrote the Math Placement Test (MPT) and got less than 55%. What are my options?

    Options after writing the Mathematics Placement Test (MPT): If you do not obtain the required mark on the MPT and, consequently, do not meet the prerequisites for Math 1050, 1051, 1090 or 1000, an option that is open to you if you need one of the courses listed above for your intended degree, is to upgrade your mathematics skills through the Foundation Math Program (Math 10XF). It is important to note that students with MPT scores of less than 50% most often require three semesters of upgrading to reach the required Math 104F standard for admission to MATH 1090. Usually, two semesters are required for admission to Math 1050 or 1051.


  10. Can I write the MPT more than once?

    The Mathematics Department administers a diagnostic of basic skills in mathematics called the Mathematics Placement Test (MPT). It may be written only once; consult the Mathematics Department (www.math.mun.ca) for exact times and locations.


  11. My grade on the MPT was below 55%; can I get signed into Math 1090 at the MLC?

    The prerequisite for Math 1090 is

    (i) appropriate combination of high school math (Academic Math 3204 or Advanced Math 3205) and a score equal to or greater than 55 on the MPT

    OR

    (ii) a pass in Mathematics 104F

    No Mathematics Learning Instructor has the authority to sign students into any Math 1090 class who received lower than 55 on the MPT.


  12. What grade do you need on the MPT to gain entry into university math courses (Math 1050/1051/1090/1000)?

    To qualify for university math courses, a student must have completed the appropriate high school prerequisites as well as obtained a minimum score on the MPT. The qualifications are as follows:

    (i) Math 1000 – Advanced Math 3205 and a score equal to or greater than 75 on the MPT or Academic Math 3204 and a score equal to or greater than 85 on the MPT.

    (ii) Math 1090 – Academic Math 3204 or Advanced Math 3205 and a score equal to or greater than 55 on the MPT.

    (iii) Math 1050/1051 – Math 3204 or Math 3205 and a score equal to or greater than 50 on the MPT.

  13. I received an MPT score of 55% (or higher) and am not required to complete the Foundation Math Program to become eligible for Math 1090. However, I feel that my math skills are weak. If I decided to complete the foundation program will it prepare me so that I will do better in Math 1090?

    The Foundation Math Program is designed for students to bring their basic math skills (essentially skills learned in the k-12 system) to a mastery level. Completing the Foundation Math Program at the MLC would definitely improve a student’s skill set, in turn, preparing them for higher levels of math, such as calculus. However, if a student meets the requirements for Math 1090 after writing the MPT they are under no obligation to complete the Foundation Math Program. It is also important to note that completion of the Foundation Math program does not guarantee that a student will 'do better' in Math 1090.


     
  14. Is it necessary to pay tuition fees for two courses if they are completed in the same semester?

    No, students only pay for the M10XF course they register for. If students complete 2 or all 3 M10XF courses in the same semester they will not be charged extra tuition fees. If necessary, course registration will be changed, at the end of the semester, to reflect the highest M10XF level completed.


  15. If I do not pass all the module tests in one semester can I pick up where I left off in the last semester?

    In order to successfully pass a Math 10XF course, students write a series of module tests throughout the semester and are required to demonstrate their mastery of each topic by passing all sections of these tests. If a student does not successfully complete all assigned sections of all module tests in one semester and the student registers for the same foundation math course again, s/he will have to write all the module tests for that course again even if they were passed in a previous semester.


  16. Can I write tests outside test centre hours?

    No, module tests are not to be written outside of regular test centre hours. The test centre hours for the MLC are posted each semester and are always held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Any test centre scheduling conflicts should be resolved at the start of the semester with the students’ instructor.


  17. Can I get a signature to write a test outside of class time?

    All signatures for tests must be obtained during class time. If students have a situation where they cannot make it to their class during the scheduled time they should make an appointment to discuss the situation with their instructor. Under no circumstances will signatures be given out during test centre hours.


  18. What happens if I fail Math 10XF?

    Like any University course, if a student fails a M10XF course he/she will have to redo the course if it is required for their program of study. For a student repeating M10XF without having attempted any module tests, the students’ program in the next semester will be the same as the students’ previous record. With reference to students repeating M10XF – for any module in M10XF that was passed in the previous semester, students will be required to do self tests only, but ALL sections of the module test, even those sections not assigned on their original program; for modules failed the student will be required to complete checkpoints and self tests, again for all sections of the module test; for those modules not yet attempted, they must complete all checkpoints, drills and self tests, for the worked assigned on the students’ ORIGINAL program. If the student was away for one or more semesters, he/she will be required to complete all checkpoints and self tests for any modules passed or failed, for ALL sections of these module tests.


  19. What are the test centre hours?

    Test centre hours vary among semesters. Test centre days are always Tuesdays and Thursdays. The current semester’s test centre times are posted on this website.


  20. When do I get the results of the last test(s) that I wrote?

    Results of tests written during Tuesday's test centre are given back to students, in class, on Fridays. Results of tests written during Thursday's test centre are given back to students, in class, the following Monday (the next week). Results of tests written in the last week of classes and all third attempts of module tests are not given back to students. Students must wait until final grades are released by the University to see whether or not they passed their course.


  21. Is Math 1050 or 1051 a prerequisite for Math 1090?

    No, Math 1050 and 1051 are not prerequisites for Math 1090. The prerequisite for Math 1090 is an appropriate combination of the Math Placement Test (MPT) and high school mathematics scores acceptable to Memorial University's Department of Mathematics and Statistics, or Math 104F. The appropriate combination for Math 1090, as defined by the department, is one of the following:

    • Academic Math 3204 and a score equal to or greater than 55 on the MPT

    • Advanced Math 3205 and a score equal to or greater than 55 on the MPT

    • Math 104F


  22. How do I register for Math 10XF/Math 1090 by Distance Education?

    If the MLC offes courses through distance education, students must register through MUN's online registration system.


  23. Can I do Math 1050/1051/1090 concurrently with the Foundation Math Program (Math 102/103/104F)?

    M1050 and/or M1051 cannot be done concurrently with M102F or M103F if the student received less than 50% on the MPT. After the student successfully completes Math 103F s/he will be eligible to register for M1050 and/or M1051. M1090 cannot be done concurrently with any of the foundation math courses if the student received less than 55% on the MPT. After the student successfully completes Math 104F s/he will be eligible to register for M1090. Students should be advised that M1050/M1051 is not a prerequisite for Math 1090.


  24. Can I drop this non–credit course after the drop date has passed?

    Non-credit courses and credit courses are treated the same under University Regulations in regards to dropping. Students with documented extenuating circumstances may be allowed to drop. For more information please refer to University Calendar 4.4.6.2.


  25. I am an on-campus student; can I register for a Math 10XF/102N course through Distance Education?

    Yes, if the MLC offers courses through Distance Education, students must register through MUN's online registration system.  Please refer to the MLC's current course offerings for on-campus and distance offerings (Current Course Schedule). 


  26. Can a student register for Math 1050 while completing Math 10XF courses?

    A student who, in the registration period for the next semester, is completing Math 103F can register for Math 1050/1051. If the student does not successfully complete Math 103F they will no longer be eligible to complete Math 1050/1051 and will be automatically deregistered from the course. Students who have completed both Math 102F and Math 103F and are currently registered in Math 104F may also register for Math 1050/1051 because the prerequisite for Math 1050/1051 is a Pass in Math 103F.
