About the IJMH

The International Journal of Maritime History is a fully-refereed, semi-annual publication, rated in several international indices, and published by the International Maritime Economic History Association. It addresses the maritime dimensions of economic, social, cultural, and environmental history. Truly international in scope, the IJMH publishes studies of a multidisciplinary nature on a broad range of maritime historical themes, including shipping, shipbuilding, seafaring, ports, resorts and other coastal communities, sea-borne trade, fishing, environment and the culture of the sea. It is available free of charge with membership in the IMEHA; members also receive – at no extra cost – up to two copies every year of "Research in Maritime History," a series of original monographs, reprints, collections of essays, bibliographies and documents designed to further the study of maritime history.

Every issue of the IJMH carries a diversity of material that reflects the breadth and international nature of economic and social research in maritime history. Scholars the world over contribute feature articles as well as research notes that inform readers of important new scholarship which has not yet reached the stage of a formal monograph, historiographical essays, and essays on source. A series of "forums" explores important issues in maritime history. The book reviews are recognized as being the most extensive in the field. Each issue also includes one – and occasionally two – "Roundtables" comprising essays by eight participants who use an important new book as a platform for discussion of a variety of themes, methodologies and perspectives that are suggested by the book; these are then followed by a response by the author. The IJMH can also be found on-line in EBSCO’s "Historical Abstracts with Full Text" database.

The cost of a membership in the IMEHA (which includes a subscription to the IJMH and RIMH) is US $75 for individuals and US $125 for institutions. We accept payment by cheque in US dollars or by VISA/Mastercard (subscription form available here).
