Adm. Hist/Bio. Sketch: The Newfoundland Shipowners Association was incorporated in 1973. Its predecessor organization was the Newfoundland Coasters' and Seamen's Association (est. 1938), reconstituted as the Newfoundland Shipowners and Ship Repairers following confederation with Canada (1949) and renamed the Newfoundland Shipowners Association (1960s).
     The mandate of the Newfoundland Shipowners Association was to represent agents and managers of vessels owned and operated in Newfoundland, and elsewhere in Canada. Its goals were to support and protect its members from adverse legislation, especially amendments to the Canadian Labour Code; to assist members with the resolution of problems pertaining to the improvements of registered vessels; and to secure improvements in surveys of coastal waterways, navigational aids, and weather observations.
     The association's membership included prominent shipping companies, including Lake and Lake Shipping, J. Petite and Sons, D. Frampton and Company, and Chimo Shipping Company. The office of the company was situated at various locations around St. John's. The association folded in 1988/89.
Scope and Content: Fonds consists of the administrative and operational records of the association from 1965 to 1988/89, and some general files relating to issues of interest to the last president, Wayne Davis, up to 1995. The administrative records include the articles of association and incorporation, minutes of meetings, assessment of membership, and membership lists. The correspondence and general files contain the records of the general affairs and interests of the association, reports, and draft briefs. There are some financial records in the form of invoices and cheques. The financial statements for the association were included in the records of the annual general meetings. Some of the material includes explanatory notations made by Wayne Davis when he was reviewing the files prior to donating them to the Maritime History Archive.
     The fonds is arranged in five series: Administrative records, 1938 (photocopy), 1973-1988; Financial records, 1980-1986; Correspondence and general files, 1965-1987; Briefs and publications, 1963-1984; Other material, 1976, 1990-1995. The fonds also contains copies of minutes of related associations: the Newfoundland and Labrador Marine Advisory Committee and the Newfoundland Sealers' Association.
