Adm. Hist/Bio. Sketch: Basil Fearn (1913-1992), businessman and shipbuilder, was born in 1913 at Harbour Buffett, Placentia Bay, son of Alice (Tulk) and Percy Fearn. In the late 1940s he established Basil Fearn Limited, a marine engine and equipment business, in St. John's. In 1947, in cooperation with fish merchant Spencer Lake, Fearn purchased the Clarenville Shipyard. The shipyard built a wide variety of vessels, including schooners, longliners, yachts and trap boats.
Scope and Content: This collection consists of 235 black and white photographs and negatives mainly of vessels constructed at the Clarenville Shipyard during the period that Basil Fearn was manager of the yard, 1947-197?. Images include the vessels MATTHEW II, MARILYN MARIE, RICHARD J., NORTHERN WAVE, GEORGE KENTNER, PHILIP E. LAKE, PENNYLUCK, SHIRLEY BLANCHE, ALGERINE, HERMITAGE, RANDOM SOUND, YOUNG HOOD, and AMBROSE SHEA. Some of the images were printed from negatives in 1997.
